An average movie

To be honest, it was one of the least appealing titles I have seen but I didn’t really know what it was about and, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it seems that it did receive some decent reviews, I really struggled to care about the damned thing after all. The main issue I had was that these two characters, a mother and her daughter, were both so pathetic and even rather obnoxious. Of course, you might argue that it was done on purpose but, as far as I was concerned, it was never really entertaining and/or interesting to behold. I also understood that Marnie, and also Lori but we didn’t spend much time with her, was basically still struggling with the death of her husband and she tried to find a way to cope with all these feelings. However, in spite of Susan Sarandon’s efforts, it never really worked for me, I’m afraid. There was also the fact that it all felt rather predictable but, at least, this aspect didn’t bother me that much. At least, Sarandon, at around 70 years old, was still so charismatic and it was thanks to her subtle warm performance that I didn’t outright hate the whole thing. Indeed, even if it was not enough to make me care about it, it was pretty neat how much she managed to do with this material. Concerning Rose Byrne, well, she wasn’t bad but, contrary to Sarandon, she wasn’t given enough to do, her character was definitely missing some depth and she was reduced to a messy emotional wreck who made a 180 degree backflip concerning her mother just before the movie ended. Anyway, to conclude, even if I can see that it was made with the best intentions, I thought it was rather weak and it is not really worth a look.
