An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a nice cast involved and since it was available on Amazon Prime, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though the title did sound really cool, it turned out to be rather disappointing and, to be honest, I actually had a hard time to care about the damned thing. I guess it’s the ‘John Wick’ effect. Indeed, since this franchise had been surprisingly successful, we will keep getting some variations of this action classic like this one. In this case, they went for a quirky vibe which was only mildly entertaining and, instead of a lonesome killer, they went for a whole team of bad*ss female assassins (It did start with one killer though, the whole team thing kicked in during the last act). Just like in ‘John Wick’,  you had a cryptic (and, as far as, I’m concerned rather lame) mythology with a mysterious firm running things, a dinner where guns were not allowed (there were still plenty of shooting there though) and a library where you could get guns hidden in books. Well, if you are a fan of Reeves’s action franchise, it might sound really awesome to you but I’m not. For starters, even though there was a really interesting cast (Karen Gillan, Freya Allan, Lena Headey, Chloe Coleman, Paul Giamatti, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh), none of these characters was really interesting and the various relationships between them were not developed whatsoever. The only interesting thing was the fact that the main character had killed the father of the girl she was protecting but they really did nothing interesting at all with that after all. Sure, fans of the genre might argue that these movies are never about the story or the characters (probably the reason why I don’t care much about such movies) but they are about the action scenes. In this area, sure, it was not bad, I guess, but I don’t think I saw anything really impressive either. I also thought that, even though Karen Gillan did her best, I didn’t think she was really convincing as a lethal killer. Anyway, to conclude, I’m being actually generous with my rating here, I guess it might be worth a look though but only if you really like the genre.
