A good movie

Since I saw ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ when they were released, of course, I was quite eager to see the next installment in James Cameron’s massive saga. Fortunately, like the previous installment, I had the pleasure to see this movie in IMAX 3D and, once again, it was a huge spectacle. Indeed, visually speaking, it was really impressive and, in this area, Cameron is still 1 or 2 decades ahead of the competition. However, in spite of what this visual wizard might claim, narratively speaking, the whole thing is getting rather tiresome though. If you take all 3 movies, he already gave us a staggering 9 hrs which wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if these super long movies would be fascinating or, at least, really entertaining, but, with each new movie, it’s less and less the case. Basically, with this new instalment and its predecessor, in spite of 3 hrs of running time, there was actually no real story. I mean, you had for the 3rd time Jake Sully duelling with Quaritch and, for a 3rd time, the people from Earth were looking for some precious MacGuffin (in ‘Avatar’, they were looking for unobtanium, in ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, they were looking for amrita and, in this movie, they were looking for Quaritch’s own son because he was able to breath the air in Pandora without oxygen mask). In ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, it was compensated by how awesome the world of this water tribe was (it worked much less when you rewatch it at home though) and, this time, they gave us the Mangkwan who were also quite fascinating, especially Varang. Unfortunately, we didn’t spend enough time with this Ash tribe who were basically reduced to be some bad ‘Na’vi’. I mean, in my opinion, it would have been so much more interesting if this tribe would have been like this for ages, just like the forest Na’vi and the water Na’vi. However, Varang explained that she made them become like this after a fire disaster which was rather lame. What was even more disappointing was the choice they made to make her Quaritch’s girlfriend which belittled so much such a seemingly strong and charismatic character. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a spectacular blockbuster and it is worth a look but, to be honest, I think I’m getting pretty much done with Pandora now.
