A good movie

I always had a weak spot for thrillers combined with investigative journalism and this one was also dealing with the most notorious scandal in the movie world, a scandal which took place only a few years ago. I actually remember reading this article, I think it was in Variety, where Ashley Judd indeed told for the first time her ghastly story. At the time, to be honest, it was rather frustrating that she didn’t name the perpetrator, seriously, what was the point then? The crazy thing was that, in the comments, right at the end, someone mentioned that she was talking about Harvey Weinstein. Indeed, it was shocking not only because of the massive number of victims (80+) but also because it had been going on for decades but nobody tried to stop him when, in fact, many people in the industry very well knew what was going on. In fact, even outside the movie industry, some people already knew about it for quite some time and that was probably the main issue with this movie. Even though the New York Times was depicted as a trailblazer and a beacon of truth, these accusations were already known for at least a decade at the famous newspaper but any publications about this subject was blocked by its management. It should have been addressed in this movie but, otherwise, it was pretty good though. Indeed, it turned out to be a strong modern female version of ‘All the President's Men’, easily the best movie in this genre. Concerning Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan, they both delivered some really solid performances. It was also intriguing to see Ashley Judd playing herself (Gwyneth Paltrow and Judith Godrèche were not displayed but it was actually them speaking on the phone) but I wonder why she didn’t speak up earlier. What did she have to lose? Was her career so important to her? It was also another very well done aspect of this movie, the fact that you could really feel the devastating impact of Weinstein’s predator behavior. Basically, he (and all the other similar men because he is obviously not the only one) pretty much ruined their life for good which was quite heartbreaking to behold. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t turn out to be a masterpiece like ‘All the President's Men’, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
