An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Amazon Prime, I thought I might as well check it out. To be honest, I never really cared for the ‘John Wick’ franchise so I was probably not the target audience for this spin-off. On the other hand, I’m a huge fan of ‘Nikita’ and I always had a weak spot for such movies dealing with female assassins. To be honest, the movie didn’t look like a mess and it was watchable but it was still borderline tedious though. First of all, I never cared for the rather convoluted mythology in this franchise. Indeed, it’s just too serious and even pretentious for such action flicks. To make things worse, this movie didn’t add anything new or interesting to this world. A bigger issue was that the story was just way too similar to John Wick’s character arc. The biggest difference was that, this time, the main character was a woman but, basically, pretty much everything else was the same. Indeed, even though they are supposed to have some strict rules and codes in this world, she completely ignored that and killed a whole bunch of faceless goons to avenge her dead father. Another notable difference was that, while John Wick was already a legend in this world, way before what happened in the first installment, in this case, this girl just finished her training and, yet, she was already one lethal killer which makes you wonder if all these dudes who got killed by her or even Wick might not really suck balls after all. Another massive disappointment was how they advertised in the trailer that she would have to face John Wick at some point but, of course, this duel turned out to be completely underwhelming after all (how these supposedly high-class professionals actually never listen to orders is also rather baffling). Finally, even though Ana de Armas was quite gorgeous as usual and even though she did display some skills in the fighting scenes, I thought her performance was rather weak but I have to admit that she wasn’t helped by the material she was provided. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was rather generous with my rating here, I guess it might still be worth a look but probably only if you really like the genre.
