Mean Girls review

An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. I know that my two daughters both really enjoyed the original ‘Mean Girls’ (at least, when they were younger) but, to be honest, I was never a huge fan. On the other hand, it has been years since I saw the damned thing. Coming back on our main feature, a couple of weeks ago, I already saw the movie adaptation of the musical ‘The Color Purple’ and this trend is not really interesting. Seriously, this hopeless search to find new ways to recycle famous IPs is rather pathetic. Anyway, since I didn’t care much about ‘Mean Girls’ and since I don’t care much about musicals either, you can imagine that I was probably not the target audience here. Still, even if it was mostly tedious to watch, I don’t think it was really bad though. Above all, there was a pretty cool cast involved (Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli'i Cravalho, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Tina Fey, Lindsay Lohan, Jon Hamm). Especially Angourie Rice, after she really impressed me in ‘Mare of Easttown’, I was quite eager to see her in something else and she was a good choice to play the lead. Reneé Rapp was also a solid choice to play the tricky part of Regina George and I wondered where I could have seen her before but she is actually a singer who didn’t act much so far. It was also pretty cool to see Auli'i Cravalho who was maybe the best of the 3 of them. However, it’s a pity that all three of them were actually too old to play their respective characters but that’s unfortunately inherent to the genre, I’m afraid. Concerning the songs, some of them were catchy but it was still nothing really memorable though. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was another rather useless piece of IP recycling, I have to admit that it was rather harmless and it might be worth a look but probably only if you really like the genre.
