An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, I was quite eager to check it out, especially since it was apparently very well received when it was released. Well, even though it was nice to see Ritchie delivering a serious movie for once, to be honest, I actually struggled to really care about the damned thing after all. I have to admit that I didn’t know what it was about, I usually try to know as little as possible before I watch a movie and, in this case, I didn’t know that it was some kind of double-rescue missions. It was based on a true story which was probably embellished when it became a full-length feature but it never really dazzled me. Sure, Ahmed and John saved one another and it’s a tribute to both men’s skills and morals (on the other hand, Ahmed was a heroin drug trafficker before that so maybe it might be disputable after all). But what about the other 1000’s other locals who were lured by the US army with some false promises and were eventually left behind? You can be sure that the number of casualties was much higher than 300 as stated at the end of this movie. And there was also the fact that, after 20 years, the US army left the country and, within 1 month, the Talibans took over again the country pretty easily so all these efforts, money, time and deaths were pretty much for nothing. Of course, you might argue that it's not what this movie was about and you would be completely right but, at the end of the day, the bond between these 2 men was fairly interesting but I never thought it was really fascinating though. At least, Guy Ritchie did deliver a solid and effective war movie and he displayed that he can do more than smart*ss UK crime features. And, of course, Jake Gyllenhaal, still one of the best actors of his generation, never disappoints and the guy was once again completely convincing here. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t really blow me away, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
