An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since I have seen all the other movies in this franchise, I thought I might as well check this last installment as well. Well, even though this franchise never really blew me away, there was actually never a real drop in quality with the sequels and, even though I might be in the minority, I thought this last installment was solid. What thing that always bothered me, especially with the first movie, was the fact that the whole concept of the purge didn’t make much sense to me. However, with each new installment, the makers kept displaying that, indeed, that’s completely correct, the purge is actually a really messed up propaganda tool with very little merit after all. This idea became even more obvious with this last (final?) installment. Indeed, the concept of the purge basically imploded showing how completely flawed and meaningless the damned thing was from the start. The link with our current polarized world was also actually pretty good. I mean, this negative focus and actually basic hatred of immigrants, legal or not, was unfortunately quite spot-on and this mix with the purge madness was quite intriguing. The irony that WASP Americans had to flee to Mexico to be safe was maybe not subtle but it was actually also pretty neat. Eventually, the only issue was that, as usual, the characters were all poorly developed. I mean, Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta did have some charisma (de la Reguera is really pretty but she does feel like a bargain version of Penelope Cruze though) but I didn’t care much for their characters and the other characters were even more underwhelming. It could have been also interesting if they explained more what happened exactly with the Forever Purgers. In fact, I think it would have been really cool if this movie focused on the Purgers instead of focusing again on the victims of the purge as they always do in these movies. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really amazing, I have to admit that I actually had a weak spot for the damned thing and I think it is worth a look but probably only if you are interested in this franchise.
