I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a huge hype when it came out and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I wasn’t really impressed after all. Maybe if I would have watched in the movie theater with a bunch of fans like I did with ‘A Minecraft Movie’, it would have been more fun. In fact, it was exactly the issue with this movie, it wasn’t really fun after all. Sure, you might argue that I’m not really familiar with the video game, I have indeed never played it (I did watch some YouTube videos about the games which were quite entertaining). Basically, there was a nice weird creepy vibe but, unfortunately, the mythology was just really too convoluted for my taste. The more I think about it, the more I believe that the material was actually rather depressing. I mean, the main character had lost his little brother who was kidnapped many years ago, his parents were gone as well, his aunt was trying to get the custody of his little sister, he was probably getting evicted, he couldn’t hold onto any job,… Seriously, it was all pretty dreary and, somehow, all this traumatic stuff was linked to the even crazier stuff that happened at the creepiest pizzeria you can think of. I wish they made it all murkier, more ambiguous, because the more they tried to explain what was going on, the more convoluted it became and the less invested I was in the whole thing. If it would have been more stripped down, if Mike would have been just a regular loser who happened to get the worst job in the world and if these weird animatronics would have been alive but without any explanation whatsoever, I think it would have been so much more entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, aside from the fanbase, I don’t think anyone will be really entertained by this movie and, to be honest, I don’t think it is really worth a look.
