To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I do have a weak spot for such minimalistic apocalyptic SF features but this one turned out to be pretty lame though. First of all, they gave us the most high-tech and least realistic bunker I have ever seen. Sure, I did get that the father was some highly qualified engineer but they really pushed it too far here. The most interesting aspect was that, at least at first, there was no bad guys. Indeed, both sides had some good intentions, they were all trying to survive and I actually didn’t agree with Maya’s logic though. Sure, she wanted to protect her daughter but then what will be her future if they never trust anyone? Was she supposed to stay alone forever? But her character did make sense and the dynamic between the two groups was interesting. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long as it was completely ruined by the annoying character played by Sam Worthington who turned out to be some half-baked villain after all. To make things worse, the whole cast was pretty weak (Jennifer Hudson, Milla Jovovich, Quvenzhané Wallis, Sam Worthington, Common) but Worthington was probably the worst of the bunch though. It was also neat that Milla Jovovich’s character was killed off way earlier than I expected but it was one of the very few surprising and interesting things in this movie. At least, it was nice to see again Quvenzhané Wallis, the amazing little girl from ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ and I can’t believe that she is already in her 20’s. Anyway, to conclude, I didn’t care much for the damned thing and I don’t think it is worth a look, even if you like the genre.
