Since Jordan Peele had a very strong track record so far, I was quite eager to check his last directorial effort, especially since it had been very well received. Well, even though I was expecting another solid mindf*ck from this director, to be honest, I wasn’t really impressed after all. I mean, the trailer was pretty cool and ambitious but, after 10 mins of running time, when it was clear that it was dealing with some alien invasion, I was thinking ‘Really?!? That’s it?’. I mean, I liked the title, it was neat, and Daniel Kaluuya gave another solid performance here but, to be honest, I didn’t care much about pretty much everything else. I have noticed that Keke Palmer was praised for her work on this movie but, even if it was intentional, her character was just too vapid and annoying for me. Furthermore, focusing on a black family of horse-wranglers was not a bad idea but, as far as I was concerned, it was never really fascinating. The fact that both siblings obviously didn’t care much for the business (Sure, OJ did feel responsible but he didn’t seem to like this job) probably didn’t help. There was also this whole business about Steve Yeun playing a previous child star who witnessed a chimpanzee going apesh*t on set which was some obvious Lynchian mindf*ck stuff but it barely had anything to do with the rest of the movie. In my opinion, it was quite a tangent, but, above all, once again, I thought it was barely interesting. Finally, you had the alien stuff which was actually the main issue here for me. I mean, sure, it was well made but, in my opinion, it was so generic though. I’m not surprised that they never mentioned or displayed the aliens in the trailer as it made the whole thing look much more intriguing than it actually turned out to be. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, even if I think it was actually a step-down compared to Jordan Peele’s previous work.
