To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was fairly well received and since it was available on HBO Max, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, I’m glad I didn’t know much about it before I watched it as it made the first 30 mins more ambiguous and more enjoyable this way. Eventually, it turned out to be one of the best robot depictions I have seen with ‘Blade Runner’ and ‘Ex Machina’, no less than that. It’s too bad that the rest of the movie, especially the whole murder scheme, was rather forgettable. Basically, the plot was obviously to give the characters something to do but it was not really interesting at all and only barely entertaining. However, everything about Iris and what was she was going through was actually quite fascinating. Indeed, you might wonder what might happen in the future if we would create an AI so developed, so close to our image, that it made then start to think independently and to develop their own feelings. Well, this movie actually displayed what could be the outcome. Indeed, on one hand, Iris was treated like everyone else and was expected to behave like anyone else and, yet, on the other hand, she was seen as disposable as a smartphone or a new pair of shoes. As a result, all these robotic beings were displayed in constant distress because of these contradictory directives which was really intriguing and surprisingly well developed. The other neat aspect was how it mirrored how many (most?) men actually handle or would like to handle their partners. Basically, women are just an object to them which should answer to any of their whims and who cares if they might think and feel anything? This movie also played so well with this idea. Finally, I already saw last year Sophie Thatcher in ‘Heretic’ where she was also intriguing and, now, I’m becoming a fan of her work as she is so charismatic. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I actually really enjoyed the damned thing and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
