I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it became a huge pop phenomenon, I wanted to check it out to see what the buzz was all about. Well, to be honest, I can’t say I became a huge fan but I do understand why it did become so popular. Indeed, the animation was really neat and I have to admit that many of the songs were super catchy which was a relief since I’m not a huge fan of musicals in genre. Furthermore, it was surprisingly funny. However, I’m afraid the whole concept never really worked for me. Indeed, the basic idea of this K-pop girl group fighting some demons with their songs was just too far-fetched for my taste. Instead of getting deeper into the characters and developing them, especially Mira and Zoey who get basically nothing to do through the whole duration, we get to see them fighting some nameless demons which was, as far as I was concerned, not really thrilling but above all not really interesting after all. Eventually, the best scenes were when you get to find out that Rumi was actually half-demon and that Ji-noo was not such a bag guy after all. If they would have dropped the whole half-baked mythology and focused on these mega pop stars struggling with their identity, then, it could have been truly amazing. I was also intrigued by how they displayed that releasing a diss track was actually not the way to go when a new band is threatening your position, it was so much more interesting than all this demon fighting stuff. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t really work for me, I have to admit that it did turn out to be a decent watch after all and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
