I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Wim Wenders and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I did hear some pretty good things about Pope Francis but, to be honest, I have to admit that I didn’t know so much about him after all. I mean, I had heard that he cared a lot about the poor and the marginalized but I didn’t know that it went actually so deep. Seriously, I have never expected to be so inspired by a pope ever in my life (I was actually raised pretty much anti-religion which probably didn’t help and, frankly, none of his predecessors did say or do anything that impressed me). It was also quite amazing to learn more about Francis of Assisi who inspired him to take this name. Both really represented what religion should be about which is not seeking wealth but seeking love for everyone and in fact everything, even for the ones who might seem unworthy. To be honest, in spite of his charisma and his great message, I don’t think that Pope Francis had such a huge impact after all. I mean, I really discovered him only after watching this movie, without it, I would have probably never known. As displayed in this movie, he mostly made speeches in front of crowds of people who already worshipped him so the impact was rather limited. Should he have been more confrontational? That’s difficult to say but, then, what’s the whole point of the Papacy? To only inspire people who are pretty much already converted? There was also the fact that, even though he was very vocal that there should be zero tolerance about sexual abuse by members of the Catholic Church, in fact, many times, he was actually rather lenient with such perpetrators. Anyway, to conclude, it still turned out to be so much more interesting than I expected and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you are interested in this man and his legacy.
