P.S.: Now, I'm actually quite eager to rewatch 'TRON: Legacy'
I wasn’t expecting much from this flick since it seemed to be a flop when it was released but there was not much else in the movie theater so I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that I actually enjoyed it much more than I expected. I think it helped that I saw this movie in IMAX 3D and this movie was often visually quite breathtaking in this format (I thought the last movie I saw in this format was ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, so already a while back, but I completely forgot that I also watched ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ recently in this format but, in this case, it didn’t have any added value whatsoever). The biggest praise this movie has received was regarding the soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails and, while I’m not a huge fan of this band (I actually don’t know them much or at all), I have to admit that this soundtrack was indeed pretty awesome. Concerning the plot which was the biggest critic this movie got, well, I don’t think it was so bad though. As far as I was concerned, it was actually super refreshing to see a super advanced AI form which actually didn’t want to destroy humankind and instead he/it was actually pretty much non-violent and just wanted to chill listening to Depeche Mode. Indeed, why more knowledge should automatically lead to more violence? In this case, more knowledge resulted in a more mellow mood which was an intriguing approach. Unfortunately, I have to admit that the rest of the story was pretty generic and uninspiring. This ‘Permanence Code’ was basically some typical MacGuffin and, while this movie was supposed to be about technology and some super intelligent individuals looking for the next technological breakthrough, it turned the whole thing into some kind of misguided treasure hunt. Another issue was this 30 mins limit after which these digital beings would dematerialize. Seriously, it’s ridiculous that they tried to make us believe that they could, let’s say, start a spaceship or their Light Cycles, get to their destination and manage to do anything in this lapse of time. If it would have been at least 1 hour, it would have been more credible. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it turned out to be a decent watch after all and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.
