Since I’m a huge fan of Paul Thomas Anderson, of course, I was really eager to check this movie and it was even my priority for 2025. Well, even though ‘The Master’, ‘Inherent Vice’, ‘Phantom Thread’ and ‘Licorice Pizza’ were all some solid movies, I struggled to really care for them but, finally, almost 20 years after the amazing ‘There Will Be Blood’, Anderson completely blew my mind once again and reminded me why he is one of the best US directors at work nowadays. First of all, the story touched me on so many levels. There was of course the political dimension which was, at the same time, timely with the resurgence of extreme rights ideas in the US and in Europe but also timeless as it brought us back in the 70’s during when leftist groups would create rampage all around the world. I also loved the fact that they didn't try to emulate a specific genre. When I watched the trailer, I thought it would be some kind of satire making fun of Leonard DiCaprio’s character but it went so much further than that. Sure, there was some hilarious slapstick involving his character but there were also some action scenes, some thriller elements and some dramatic moments as well and it was amazing how it all worked perfectly together. Furthermore, even though you didn’t spend much time on one specific character, they were all so complex and so fascinating to behold with some top performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti and Benicio Del Toro. Eventually, the only thing that didn’t work for me was the moment when this Indian bounty hunter did change his mind to save this young girl but it was a minor thing. It is not very often that you come across such a deeply thoughtful and yet completely entertaining movie and I loved every second of it. Anyway, to conclude, Paul Thomas Anderson did it again, he delivered here another masterpiece and you should definitely check it out.
