To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Malin Akerman and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, as usual, I had no idea what it was really about before watching it but I have to admit that I was really positively surprised by the damned thing. Basically, it is actually a super laid-back sweet little movie with barely any conflict whatsoever but the lack of narrative curve was exactly why I thought it was so refreshing and enjoyable. The fact that Blythe Danner was such a perfect choice to play this character also helped, even though it was hardly convincing that she would spend 20 years on her own after the death of her husband but it was a minor issue. Her random friendship with the young pool cleaning guy was also quite intriguing, refreshingly platonic and quite satisfying. Unfortunately, even though it was really close to really win me over, there was one thing that actually slightly ruin the whole thing for me. Indeed, why on Earth did they decide to kill off Bill? Seriously, it was such a lame narrative choice, obviously just to get some dramatic climax but it was completely unnecessary and it had exactly the opposite effect on me. It also did ruin Malin Akerman’s character. Indeed, even though Akerman was the main reason why I wanted to check this movie in the first place, she was actually involved only for 10 mins. Above all, there was actually no room to explore the relationship between this mother and her daughter because her new lover just died when her daughter showed up so she had obviously other things in her mind. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was actually a nice surprise and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
