An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Hilary Swank and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, with such a high rating on IMDb (7.4), to be honest, I was expecting more actually. Sure, I have to admit that it was a heartwarming story but the approach was just way too schmaltzy for my taste. At least, even though it was labeled as a faith-based feature, they actually kept down the religious undertones which was appreciated. Concerning the story, I actually think it did have some potential, above all the fact that Sharon was an alcoholic. Indeed, as pointed out by her friend, even though she meant well, she was probably displaying some addict behavior which was interesting. Unfortunately, they didn’t really go deep into this direction at all. Instead, they kept hammering the fact that what she was doing was amazing which wasn’t really untrue but it would have been more interesting to go deeper into this character. At least, Hilary Swank was pretty good and it is rather amazing to think that this frail-looking woman (which was completely appropriate for this movie) played 20 years ago a really badass boxer in ‘Million Dollar Baby’. Concerning Alan Ritchson, I know he got his breakthrough recently with ‘Reacher’ (which I haven’t seen) and he was a good choice. However, even if he was not bad, there was unfortunately not enough depth with his character. Eventually, you might wonder if they should be so thankful that a woman should go so far to make a difference while the whole US health seems to be rigged to let such helpless children die simply because they weren’t born in a wealthy family. Anyway, to conclude, even if I didn’t care much about the damned thing, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
