An average movie

To be honest, I never really cared for this franchise but one of my colleagues at the time had a box set with the first trilogy and it took me more than a decade to watch the other installments. This time, I was planning to watch all the (current) installments since they were all available on HBO Max and I was especially intrigued by this last sequel since it had been very well received. Eventually, I have to agree that it was indeed a solid sequel, probably the best one so far. Following the 5th installment, they came up with the longest introduction so far and it worked really well. Then, the big twist this time was that it wasn’t an actual premonition but a dream a girl was having about her grandmother surviving some major disaster. It was obviously a new approach to the concept and it did work very well. It also meant that ALL the victims were related to the main character which was actually much heavier than when it was involving some random strangers. As a result, the tone was much darker than usual and, yet, there was still plenty of humor which has always been a trademark in this franchise and the way they managed to balance both tones was pretty neat. The cool thing with this franchise is that, most of the time, everyone dies at the end which is quite refreshing compared to other horror franchises. However, since they are all going to die anyway, why should they even bother fighting and trying to survive? Unfortunately, the only thing they managed to come up with to solve this narrative issue were these ‘rules’ which should help them to survive after all but it never worked. The fact that, most of the time, everyone dies at the end makes these rules even more pointless to me. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was actually pretty entertaining and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
