An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was Edgar Wright’s directorial debut, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, I really ended up with some mixed feelings though. Indeed, on one hand, it was pretty neat to see that a 20 year old like Wright could manage to shoot such a fairly ambitious movie as a first feature. However, the damned thing turned out to be so weak though. Eventually, Wright would get his breakthrough with making some parodies like ‘Shaun of the Dead’ which is still his most successful movie and it was pretty much the same concept here. Indeed, this time, he tried to mix up Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns with Monty Python’s humor which wasn’t necessarily a bad idea. Unfortunately, most of the jokes were just terrible and, even if Wright was still young, it felt as if it was written by a 12-year-old boy. For example, they gave us some white boys with some dark make-up playing some Indians and, of course, you could argue that they had no money but it still felt childish and cringe-inducing. Furthermore, it was supposed to be some quest in the Wild West but it was obvious that they shot the whole thing in a single location which didn’t look like a typical US Western landscape at all. Furthermore, it was just so pathetic to see these cowboys wandering without actual horses. Sure, it might have been too expensive or too complicated to secure some actual horses but their gimmick (clearly lifted from Monty Python) got old very fast. The fact that the guy playing the main character was really bad probably didn’t help either. Eventually, it really felt like a bunch of kids playing cowboys and Indians which wasn’t really entertaining. Anyway, to conclude, even though it was interesting to see how Edgar Wright’s career started, this movie was actually rather lame and I don’t think it is really worth a look.
