An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Isabelle Huppert, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, with the combination of its title, its poster and its synopsis, I was actually expecting some silly comedy. However, I was quite surprised that the beginning turned out to be so gritty and fairly realistic. Unfortunately, this surprising realism clashed with the silliness of the whole concept and I’m afraid the makers never managed to make it really work. Seriously, it has been a while since I saw a movie so scattered and, to be honest, so completely tone-deaf. Indeed, from the moment she heard that the woman who took care of her mother was somehow indirectly involved in this drug business, it became something else entirely and this switch was just so jarring. At first, I thought she did it because she really liked Kadidja but, very soon, it became clear that she did it because she needed the money which clashed so much with what we saw before. At some point, it also felt like it was going in ‘Breaking Bad’ mode and I won’t even start to mention the convoluted past of the main character. And, of course, she was also romantically involved with the police chief leading this investigation. Sure, Isabelle Huppert  is a great actress and it was impressive how much she could do with such material but, seriously, the damned thing was a mess. I’m also not sure if I cared about the racial stereotypes regarding the Arabs and the Chinese in this flick. Anyway, to conclude, I had some rather low expectations about this movie but, in spite Huppert, it turned out to be even worse and I don’t think it is really worth a look.
