To be honest, I never really cared for this franchise but one of my colleagues at the time had a box set with the first trilogy. This time, I’m planning to watch all the (current) installments since they are all available on HBO Max and, in fact, I’m actually surprised that it took me more than a decade to finally watch this 4th installment. Well, I wish I could say it was worth the wait but I’m afraid it wasn’t really the case though. Indeed, at that point, the franchise was definitely losing some steam and the only new thing here was the addition of some cheap looking 3D effects. By the way, 2009 was really the high point with this 3D gimmick following the release of ‘Avatar’ and, back then, you HAD to watch every single mainstream movie in this format which was just so annoying. At least, the opening scene was not bad and it was a good idea to have it taking place during some car race like this one. Concerning the cast, well, it was probably the most underwhelming one so far. Indeed, Bobby Campo who was playing the lead this time felt like a cheap version of the Franco brothers and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was seriously missed (did she actually die in the previous installment? I saw this movie already twice but I still can’t remember it…). Concerning the story, it was a nice touch that Mykelti Williamson’s character actually wanted to die (it didn’t last for long though) but I thought it was incredibly lazy how this group of friends was completely unfazed after Hunt’s tragic death, even if the guy seemed to be a douchebag. Anyway, to conclude, it is apparently the lowest point in this franchise so, hopefully, the next installment will be slightly more satisfying because this one was not really worth a look.
