An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, at some point, it was picked up by Indiewire as one of the best movies released in 2021 (if you would look for this list, this movie is not there anymore though) so I thought I might as well check it out. I understand what they were trying to achieve here and it reminded me of the wild goofy vibe displayed in ‘Barbie’ which would be a huge success a few years after this movie was released. Unfortunately, to be honest, I really struggled to care about the damned thing after all. Basically, the biggest challenge for the people involved was to make sure that even though Barb and Star (but also Edgar and Sharon Gordon Fisherman) were seriously pathetic (obviously on purpose), they still had to be entertaining and/or interesting to behold. Well, at least as far as I’m concerned, I’m afraid they didn’t really succeed. I mean, sure, it was pretty chaotic and there were some interesting wild and surreal moments but, at the end, it still felt like watching two boring middle-aged women going to some boring holidays in some boring all-inclusive resort in Florida. Sharon Gordon Fisherman’s plan to murder everyone in this town was even more generic and even more tedious. The poster with them riding some giant shrimp was a perfect example and was really cool but the movie actually never reached this level of complete madness, it just only flirted with it which was rather disappointing. I also think that Edgar should have ended up with Bard instead of Star, it would have been less expected and therefore more interesting. By the way, I have to admit that I was actually positively surprised by Jamie Dornan. Indeed, he is usually rather bland and boring but it was pretty bold to take this part (even if he was still not really good though). Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t really work for me, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look.
