To be honest, I had some rather low expectations with this movie but, since it was starring John Travolta, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, after a truly abysmal opening scene involving Tom Sizemore giving some really half-baked speech (for some reason, his character never showed up again afterwards), I thought the whole thing would be really awful. And yet, after Travolta’s character got shot, I have to admit that it actually slightly got better. It was still really weak but I have seen such really awful similar direct-to-VOD features, very often starring Bruce Willis at the end of his career, and this one actually had some (very few) qualities. I mean, as usual with such productions, the directing was amateurish and the acting was really embarrassing (especially with Katheryn Winnick, I have seen her in 6 movies and, even though I will admit that she is really hot, she was just so weak each time I saw her). It’s also the kind of movie which felt as if it was shot yesterday even though it was supposed to be taking place in the 60’s. Concerning the story, everything involving the speedboat racing and the speedboat business was obviously super tedious, ‘Speed 2’ already told us that there is nothing really exciting abouts boats. However, there was one element which did intrigue me. Indeed, as depicted in this movie, Ben Aronoff was really successful but he wasn’t interested in working with the mob and, unlike many people who end up working for them, he wasn’t interested in their money either. However, they basically coerced him to get involved and I thought it was actually a fairly complex and intriguing predicament. Indeed, it’s easy to blame him but if your life and/or the lives of your loved ones would be at stake, what would you do? Of course, this cheap*ss movie didn’t do interesting with all this but, at least, there was some potential. Anyway, to conclude, the damned thing was a waste of time and you should probably avoid it.
