An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Florence Pugh and since it was available on Netflix, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, I can see why Pugh would be interested to work with Sebastián Lelio but, to be honest, even if it was not bad at all, it was still probably the least interesting movie I have seen from this director so far. Indeed, even if the story had some potential, it was just too slight after all. At least, Pugh shouldn’t be blamed as she was, as usual, quite spellbinding to behold. I wonder if her approach for this character was not too modern though and it was a mistake to make her a morphine addict (at least, I think it was morphine…). Either they should have developed more this aspect or they should have dropped it altogether. Concerning the rest of the movie, well, it was seriously anti-religion, that’s for sure. I mean, I get that these Irish people had a grim life and an even grimmer future ahead of them so, with such circumstances, there is nothing really wrong about focusing on your faith and hoping that there is a God watching over you if it gives you comfort. However, it was seriously despicable how these parents, even this whole community, would just slowly kill a poor young girl just to prove how strong their faith was. It was also bewildering that they wouldn’t listen to this nurse at all. In this case, why did they hire her in the first place then? The ending also didn’t work. Sure, to see this woman giving up everything to save this child was quite impressive and inspiring but, to be honest, it felt too simple. Indeed, beside the physical damage done, this young girl was psychologically also a complete mess and I’m not sure if kidnapping her, giving her a new name and bring her to Australia would really solve everything that was screwed in her mind. The fact that this journalist would also tag along the whole way was also quite ridiculous. Finally, it was interesting how the movie started and ended on a movie set but Lelio did pretty much nothing with this so it felt like a rather useless gimmick. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I still think it was a decent watch and it is worth a look.
