I wasnโt really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out. It was apparently a pet project for Georges Lucas who pretty much paid the whole thing with his own money. Well, it was definitely a very strong story but, to be honest, it did deserve a better movie than this one. Itโs not that it was very bad, technically, it was actually well made and the dog fights were actually quite impressive. The main issue was that, even though there was a nice cast of black actors (Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Ne-Yo, Leslie Odom Jr., Michael B. Jordan, Andre Royo, Method Man), all their characters were just so poorly fleshed out. The only exception was maybe the character played by Nate Parker but, even in his case, it was still not enough and his character would have really worked only if they would have spent more time and attention on him. David Oyelowo was a perfect example. He is actually a solid actor and he did what he could but his character, instead of being his own person, was basically some black version of Maverick. And, seriously, who cared about his really half-baked romance with an Italian girl? However, all the other characters were even less developed. The other thing that bothered me with this movie were the dialogues. I mean, it was a good thing that most of the dialogues from the white characters were heinous and racist because it was probably how it was back then. However, all the dialogues, from the black or white characters, were just so clunky, I was just rolling my eyes through the whole duration. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it is still a really important story and it is definitely worth a look.ย
