To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Ethan Hawke, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, with such a title, it did sound like a terrible B action flick (which it was) and I wonder why such a solid actor like Hawke keeps making such movies from time to time. In fact, I was just checking his filmography and he actually only did a few of those after all. Anyway, the concept was seriously preposterous but it was still impressive to see what an actor like Hawke still managed to do with this material. Indeed, after a really clunky and useless intro with Rutger Hauer (seriously, what was the point of his character?), I have to admit that it was pretty cool to see Hawke going full James Bond and it was even cooler that he actually pulled it off quite convincingly. Unfortunately, he got shot, they managed to bring him back to life somehow but, obviously, only for 24 hrs which was just so lame. Sure, you could argue that it was the whole point of this movie but I’m afraid I never really cared about this concept. It didn’t help that Qing Xu was such a bland partner. I understand that, since this movie was at least partially a Chinese production, one of the leads had to be Chinese but they could have picked up someone more convincing and someone who had more chemistry with Hawke. At least, Paul Anderson (who was really awesome in ‘Peaky Blinders’) was not bad, even if his character was rather half-baked, pretty much like the rest of the movie, I’m afraid. Anyway, to conclude, I think I was rather generous with my rating, the damned thing was pretty weak and you should probably avoid it.
