To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since there was a decent cast involved and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. In fact, I already saw it about 6 months ago when I was visiting my sister and her family but she and her husband insisted that we watched the French dubbed version but it was pretty much unwatchable. Especially in this case, where the language was so important, you really have to see it in English, there is no other way. On top of that, when you watch it dubbed, you miss maybe half of the really solid performances from Jessie Buckley and Olivia Colman, some of the most interesting actresses at work nowadays. However, in spite their efforts, even in the original version, I still didn’t really care about the damned thing though. Basically, they tell you at some point that this true story was nowadays forgotten but, to be honest, I wasn’t surprised as it was just too slight. The fact that they went for a rather light quirky approach probably didn’t help either. It was also such a modern take with no efforts taken to tell this story within the morals and views of the time period. As if women are treated so much better nowadays, they are still pretty much second-class citizens, we just pretend otherwise, that’s the only difference. In this case, expect for her black lover (why a black man by the way? to show how advanced and modern Rose was compared to the other characters? The real woman this story was based on certainly didn’t have a relationship with a black dude), all the men displayed were some appalling chauvinist morons so there was definitely some feminist agenda here. Basically, Edith was also a victim of the mistreatment inflicted to her by men, especially her father but I didn’t agree. Indeed, the only outlet she could find resulted in another woman risking going to the jail (which she actually did in spite the false epilogue at the end) and, even worse, resulting in a young child losing her mother. Anyway, to conclude, even if I didn’t really care for this story, thanks to the very strong actresses involved, I was still worth a look though.
