To be honest, when I saw the trailer and the title of the movie (what was that about actually?), I was actually hardly impressed. However, when I noticed that it was directed by Zach Cregger who had made the amazing ‘Barbarian’, I became right away quite intrigued and, when it turned out to be a surprise hit at the box-office, I was actually eager to check it out. Well, while I still preferred ‘Barbarian’, it was definitely another solid horror flick from Cregger. Indeed, once again, I was above all impressed how well the damned thing was written. Without spoiling it, it was told through some kind of chapters, each one bringing you closer to a really wild conclusion. Basically, it was some kind of jigsaw puzzle which was just so much more clever than your average horror flick. However, this approach did have its downside which was maybe the reason why I wasn’t completely sold (it wasn’t far from it though). Indeed, it started with Justine, the poor schoolteacher, and it was just really neat to see how complex her character was. However, with each new chapter focusing on another character, the following respective characters became less and less developed along the road. Eventually, who they were as people didn’t really matter, the only thing that mattered was how they moved forward the plot towards its climax which was, no matter how effective and entertaining it was, slightly frustrating. I do have to admit that it didn’t really get the subtext behind the whole thing which might have prevented me from fully enjoying it, I guess I’m not that smart. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn’t completely blow me away, I’m not surprised that it turned out to be so successful, I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to see what Zach Cregger will do next.
