To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since I have a weak spot for Robin Wright and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, even though it might have been a coincidence, it is rather weird that her directorial debut was so similar to ‘Into the Wild’, a film directed by her ex-husband Sean Penn more than 10 years before. However, even though I’m a huge fan of ‘Into the Wild’, her movie didn’t work so well, even if I have a weak spot for such stories. I mean, the scenery was gorgeous and Wright is such a charismatic actress but it might have been the issue here. Indeed, even though her character almost did die out there, it still made the whole endeavor look too good to be true and still too easy to achieve. The fact that her savior showed up completely randomly exactly at the right time and gave her exactly what she needed afterwards to make it work probably didn’t help either. On the other hand, as soon as Demian Bichir’s character started to come on a regular basis, the movie became something else, something more believable, and I did appreciate the nice gentle mood growing between them. It was nothing really amazing but it worked and I wish the movie focused only on this relationship. Unfortunately, they used the ‘cancer’ gimmick to end up on a climatic dramatic note which was just cheap and seriously unnecessary. Eventually, the whole thing did feel rather pretentious and not really interesting but there is always something fascinating about people rejecting our consumerist way of life for something else. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
