Of course, since I have been following the MCU from the very beginning, I was going to watch this movie, even if the trailer didn’t really impress me. Well, to be honest, I’m afraid Marvel still didn’t get their mojo back though. I mean, sure, it was probably the best movie they released in 2025 (see also ‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘Captain America: Brave New World’) but it was still nothing mind-blowing though. What I did like was that they really went for a different mood for this movie. Indeed, to be able to explain that this group of super-heroes was already around but somehow never involved in the previous movies, thanks to the Multiverse, they set the action in a different timeline. As a result, the action was taking place in the 60’s but a slightly different 60’s than we had. It was pretty subtle but I have to admit that it was well done. What also worked was the cast (Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser). Indeed, even if the MCU is struggling, they still manage to attract some strong actors and, once again, it really paid off as all the actors involved were solid. Unfortunately, well, pretty much nothing else really worked though. I mean, for once, the running time was less than 2hrs which was refreshing and, yet, the movie still felt too long somehow. The reason why was pretty simple, it was because the story was just so damned generic. Furthermore, maybe I missed something, but didn’t the Silver Surfer showed up completely randomly? Then, after that, they kept making plans to defeat Galactus, plans which obviously all failed until the end when they obviously succeeded. I understand that Galactus is a classic Marvel villain but this plot was just rather tedious. I was also surprised that, by the end of the movie, they didn’t end up on the Sacred Timeline. Actually, how awesome it would have been if, half way through, while they were trying to defeat Galactus, they were actually transported by accident to our universe? It would have been a massive jump in tone but it would have been so much more entertaining than this borefest. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
