To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Chris Evans and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, unfortunately, even though it was a great true story with tons of potential, I’m afraid it turned out to be another weak and completely forgettable Netflix production. Basically, it felt like a rather weak mix of ‘Munich’ with ‘Argo’. Unfortunately, it was a perfect example that, even with a great story, you won’t get automatically a great movie. The opening scene was a perfect example. Seriously, it was so clunky and it barely made sense. Obviously, it was to show that Captain America, I mean, Chris Evans was so reckless but, above all, so courageous, that he would run into a field that he has never seen before and found a boy he has never seen before either while a bunch of bloodthirsty Africans are too clueless to catch him. Right there, by committing so hard to the White Savior trope with such a meaningless scene (the point should be about saving all this people, not about showing how courageous this white dude is), it shows how misguided their approach was from the start. To make things worse, the dialogues were all fairly pathetic and nobody involved in this team was developed whatsoever (to be fair, it was already the case with ‘Munich’ though). Another really clunky scene was the road-block thingy. It probably never occurred but, above all, the way it was handled was probably the worst way you could handle such a situation but, sure, why not? However, after facing such a road-block during their first trip, then ramming it, they then never faced a road-block ever? I mean, after this big blunder, you would expect the bad big boss to reinforce it but, apparently, he removed the whole thing which didn’t make sense at all. While they were celebrating at the end, I was also wondering what happened to the staff of the hotel. Even though they were not Jews, maybe they were also saved? It seems rather doubtful and you can be sure that the local soldiers would then retaliate against them. Anyway, to conclude, I was probably too generous with my rating here but it was just an incredible story and I think it is worth a look but it definitely did deserve a better movie though.
