Since I really enjoyed the original ‘Candyman’, I was quite eager to see this sequel, especially since it did receive some solid reviews. It seems that, even though it was a box-office hit when it was released, many horror fans were eventually rather dismissive as it wasn’t a classic slasher flick. In fact, it was exactly why this sequel was interesting to me because it really stood out from the genre. To be honest, it has been years since I saw its predecessor but I never forgot it as it was easily one of the most genuinely terrifying horror flicks I ever saw. I have to admit that this sequel was not so scary but the mood was still neat though and the damned thing was really spooky. I think the only thing that was missing was Tony Todd playing the Candyman as he was easily one of the best villains I have seen in a horror movie. I mean, the guy here was pretty good though but, above all, they went for a completely approach this time as they didn’t focus so much on Candyman as an individual but more as an actual myth. It was something that they did tackle in the first movie but they went this time so much deeper and, as far as I was concerned, it made the whole thing really compelling. Indeed, it went way beyond your usual slasher flick with a psycho killers slaying his victims with some supposedly inventive ways as you usually get with this genre. Eventually, the mythology probably did become slightly too intricate and the characters could have been more developed but I was actually pretty impressed by its original aspects. For Nia DaCosta, it was a really solid sophomore directorial effort and, like so many other of her peers, she was then hired by Marvel but she ended up directing ‘The Marvels’, probably one of the most underwhelming MCU installments but, hopefully, she will soon get the opportunity to bounce back. Anyway, to conclude, even though it wasn’t an improvement on the original version, it was certainly an interesting take and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you’re looking for some original horror feature.
