An average movie

I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan of Superman (Batman is so much more interesting) but I have to admit that I was curious to see what James Gunn would do with this propriety, especially since it would launch a whole reboot of the DC universe. Well, to be honest, I wasn’t really impressed. Above all, I thought the whole thing was really messy. First of all, it felt like watching installment 3 or 4 and it felt like we were starting in the middle of the story of this 3rd or 4th installment. Then, there was so much stuff going on and so many characters involved and I wonder why they thought it would be a great idea to squeeze so much material into one movie. For example, while watching the movie I had actually no idea that Frank Grillo was playing Rick Flag Sr., arguably the father of Joel Kinnaman’s character in ‘Suicide Squad’ or maybe not since they are rebooting this whole freaking universe. Finally, who thought it would be a great idea to add for the first time Superman’s dog to the mix? I understand that Gunn wanted to go for a lighter approach, especially after Zack Snyder’s grim take, but this mutt was just so annoying. So, as you can see, there were many things that did bother me but I have to admit that there were some good ideas. First of all, even though it was nothing really creative, it was cool that they brought back John Williams’s iconic theme and it automatically did elevate the whole thing. Furthermore, the main cast (David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult) was pretty good, especially Hoult who was probably the best Lex Luthor I have seen so far. Finally, it was a solid approach to show that Clark Kent/Superman was who he became to be because of how he was lovingly raised by the Kents and that his biological parents didn’t have the best intentions after all. It was a really interesting idea but, since there was so much other stuff going on, unfortunately, they spent only 5 mins on this. Anyway, to conclude, as a result, even though it might seem surprising, ‘Man of Steel’ is still my favorite Superman movie but this one is worth a look though, especially if you like the genre.
