Yes, it is indeed reality television. And yes, it is about obesity and invasive as they come. But unlike most other similar shows that are based on morbid curiosity alone, I see great value in in this one. First of all, it depicts the dynamics of addiction and self destruction. Here's a hint: addicts always lie straight to your face, and the good doctor gets very much pissed off every time they do that. Some get kicked out of the program.
Many of the patients here are so obese they're barely alive, and both the living conditions and their personal history only add to their deadly addiction to food. The most common issue is untreated trauma and anxiousness that these people treat by eating. And they have their own enablers who keep feeding them until they either change their ways or die.
The enablers are the worst. Without them these people wouldn't be in this condition. One could ask if they even understand what they're doing, they're doing it on purpose or if they're completely insane. It's sickening, but it's true.
Some could say it is very cruel to become a subject of a show such as this. As far as I know, they get paid handsomely for their participation, and since the treatments cost an arm and a leg, they will need every penny they can get. And not all of the stories are happy, lots of people can never beat their addiction and simply succumb to their health issues.
