To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since ‘Escape Room’ turned out to be a guilty pleasure of mine, I have to admit that I was actually eager to see this sequel. Well, just as much as I didn’t expect to enjoy ‘Escape Room’, I was surprised by how much I also enjoyed this sequel. The flashback at the beginning was rather awkward (did they seriously have to recap the whole movie?) and I wish they didn’t force all these champions to play again. I think it would have been more satisfying if they all joined again willingly. On the other hand, why would they? It was one of the cool thing with their approach, I really did appreciate how they displayed the emotional and psychological toll these games had on the players. It was also nice how they displayed that, since the games were so intricate, they could barely function anymore since they couldn’t make the difference between what was the ‘normal’ world and what was the ‘game’ world. Unfortunately, they didn’t really go deep enough and all the characters were eventually barely developed but I guess you shouldn’t expect more from a rather basic horror feature like this one. Still, while I was barely able to follow these intricate puzzles, I thought it was again really satisfying to see some actually really smart people figuring out their way out from these escape rooms. Indeed, in most movies, especially in the horror genre, you usually get some good-looking, possibly even charismatic, characters, but they are usually not intellectually brilliant or this aspect of their personality is almost always neglected. Here, being really smart is/was their only way to survive which was so refreshing to see. Of course, the ending was rather predictable (By the way, I saw the Theatrical cut. The Extended cut has apparently a completely different ending) but I thought it worked out pretty well, re-enforcing the idea that, at this point, Zoey had no idea anymore about what was real and what was part of the game. Anyway, to conclude, I wonder if they will come up with some more instalments, but I do have to admit that I actually liked this sequel and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you did like its predecessor.
