To be honest, even though I grew up in the 90’s when this cartoon was a huge hit, I never became a fan though and all the adaptions that came afterwards for the silver screen were just rather weak. So, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it had been well received and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, I have to admit that I was really positively surprised and it turned out to be easily the best adaptation so far involving these wacky turtles. First of all, there is no doubt that animation is the best medium to tell this story (even though I don’t remember much ‘TMNT’ which was released almost 20 years ago, it was also one of the better versions). On top of that, the animation style was really neat and original. Above all, it was the first time that the makers finally focused on the fact that these characters were some teenagers, instead of focusing on their badass ninjas skills which was what they always did so far. As a result, this group of characters was much more endearing and relatable as the only thing they really wanted was not to kick some ass but to be able to go to high-school and hang out with kids of their age. Suddenly, instead of being some rather boring super-heroes, they were some lonely kids who dreaded the fact that they could never fit in in our world which was quite endearing. In a similar fashion, for once, April O'Neil was not some bimbo (seriously, she was even played by Megan Fox at some point…) but some normal average woman. The fact that she was voiced by the amazing Ayo Edebiri also helped me appreciate even more this character. Concerning the rest of the movie, especially the plot, to be fair, it was rather generic though. One thing that bothered me was the fact that, even though the turtles and Splinter looked ‘normal’ even mutated, all these other mutated animals looked rather horrific which felt rather unnecessary and unfair (some of these characters were pretty entertaining though). Anyway, to conclude, even if it was still not a masterpiece, I have to admit that it was actually a pretty good animated feature and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre or if you are fan of these ninja turtles.
