An average movie

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Zoey Deutch, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, Deutch was not really good here, in fact, she was one of the weaker aspects of this movie (Dylan O'Brien was even worse though but I’ll get back to that later on) but she wasn’t helped by the fact that her character was rather half-baked. In fact, the main character was played neither by Deutch or O'Brien but by Mark Rylance who was pretty much pitch-perfect. Furthermore, I really liked the idea of a movie focusing on a master cutter (don’t call him a tailor…) and to have the whole movie taking place in his tailor shop was a bold move. I actually have a weak spot for minimalistic movies taking place in one location, at least, when they are well done and this movie displayed how such movies can falter. I’m not surprised that it was a directorial debut as, even though the concept was intriguing, first-time director Graham Moore relied too much on numerous twists to keep his audience interested. I really wonder how the whole thing would have turned out to be if he would have gone for a more streamlined approach. Concerning the cast, Rylance was fine and Johnny Flynn was actually not bad at all. As mentioned before, Zoey Deutch looked really lovely but I never believed in her character. Finally, the worst of the bunch was Dylan O'Brien though. I’m not sure if his performance was the issue or if they messed up his character during the writing by making him such an insufferable spoiled gangster kid. However, in contrary to Deutch’s character who was around through the whole duration, he was killed fairly early on which was a blessing. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I have to admit that it was actually a decent watch and it is worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.
