To be honest, I wasn’t really dying to see a new instalment for this franchise. In fact, I was actually surprised that they would come back so soon with a new sequel only a few years after completing the last trilogy with ‘Jurassic World Dominion’. Anyway, Nick, my step-son, has always been a big fan (we have seen all the ‘Jurassic World’ instalments together in the movie theater) so we had to see this one as well. Well, I will have to admit it, it turned out to be actually fairly entertaining. Indeed, they basically went for a super basic story about going to an island full of lethal dinosaurs to hunt them down which was quite efficient. However, even though it did work, it was also terribly generic and completely forgettable. Eventually, at this point, what else could you do with this material? Mutate the dinosaurs once again and make them sentient? It does sound really daft and a complete rip-off of ‘Planet of the Apes’ but I don’t see what else they could do or, otherwise, they will be constantly rehashing again and again the same ideas. Anyway, what also worked in this movie was the cast. Indeed, especially Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali both did wonder with this material, even if they probably only came for the big fat paycheck (I don’t care that Johansson said she was a huge fan, I’m pretty sure it was some PR BS). Coming back on Johansson, it was pretty neat how she managed to be a convincing badass military and, yet, she still displayed some empathy and some surprising depth which was pretty impressive since it was a rather mindless blockbuster dealing with huge dinosaurs. On the downside, I was still slightly bothered by the fact that she was constantly wearing some tight tops through the whole duration. At the end, Nick was surprised that it was so long and, he was right, there is no need that a blockbuster like this one should last more than 2 hrs and I wish they could have dropped the rescued family somehow. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing amazing whatsoever, I have to admit that it was still a decent watch and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
