A good movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Claude Sautet and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, it was only half way through that I figured out that ‘Intersection’, a really lame movie I saw about a decade ago, was actually a remake of this French movie. Anyway, since Sautet has such a strong reputation in France, I always wanted to get to know more about his work (I have only seen 2 of his other movies and it was at least 2 decades ago) and this movie certainly didn’t disappoint me. Indeed, the guy has such an uncanny way to create a mesmerizing romantic mood, I’m already becoming a fan. On top of that, Michel Piccoli and Romy Schneider were so charismatic and they both gave some really solid performances. Unfortunately, even though it was always intriguing to behold, in my opinion, the material was just too thin after all. Basically, it was barely 80 mins long and, in spite of Sautet’s inspired directing, it was about some upper-class womanizer whose life was so hard because he couldn’t make up his mind between 2 gorgeous women, not really much more. The other mistake made by Sautet was that, even though the flashforward scenes involving the car accident worked fine at first, in the final act, he then only focused on the car accident which was obviously never supposed to be the point here. I mean, once again, the running time was quite short so spending 20 mins on a car crash was probably not the best move. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was actually pretty good and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
