To be honest, I know pretty much nothing about Dungeons & Dragons but since this movie was fairly well received and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Eventually, I wonder what the fan base of Dungeons & Dragons thought of this movie (it still turned out to be a box-office flop after all though). Well, was it really one of the best fantasy features ever made as it was described by some of these critics? Probably not but I would still have to agree that the damned thing was not bad at all after all. Indeed, this fantasy world was fine and the characters, while being all rather stereotypical, were decent enough. With Chris Pine, they also had the perfect actor to play the lead. I also liked that it was basically a heist movie taking place in a fantasy world and it was a nice mix of both genres. However their masterstroke was to go for this irreverent tone though. Indeed, it worked so well and while all the fantasy stuff was after all rather generic and forgettable after all, I enjoyed mostly the entertaining banter between the various characters involved. Eventually, it was pretty cool how they managed to keep a neat balance between the humor and being still respectful with the genre. Eventually, the only thing that did bother me was that it was slightly too long. Indeed, as usual, there is really no good reason why such a brainless blockbuster should last more than 2 hrs and this movie was not an exception. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really ground-breaking, I have to admit that it was a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, at least, if you like the genre.ย
