I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back and since I had it on DVD, I thought I might as well check it out again. In fact, I actually watched this movie for the first time in the movie theater back in the 90’s when the Wallace and Gromit shorts were released all together. Anyway, that’s where it all started for Wallace and Gromit and, even after all these years, the damned thing is still a total blast and still one of my favorite from their stories. Sure, the clay-motion might seem crude compared to their later features (you have to keep in mind that Nick Park did the whole thing pretty much on his own at the time) but there is no denying that these characters were pure gold from the start. In fact, Gromit was still already pretty much pitch-perfect and wouldn’t evolve much but Wallace’s design would slightly change with the following installments. The other thing I really loved about this first short was that, from a narrative point of view, it clearly stood out from their other movies and, only therefore, it did get some extra points from me. Indeed, that’s always something that bothered me with Wallace and Gromit. I mean, I always loved their movies, however, after ‘The Wrong Trousers’, all their stories looked too similar for my taste. Not this one though and that’s why it’s still one of their best stories. On top of that, it was just really quite hilarious, that never changed and it was there already from the very beginning. This robot was also pure genius, the way Park managed to have this character expressing himself without any facial features, only with his hands and body language, it was really impressive. Anyway, I really have a weak spot for the damned thing, that’s for sure.
