I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but since there was a pretty cool cast involved, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, even if there was nothing really wrong with the damned thing, I’m afraid it turned out to be a rather generic ‘cancer’ drama after all. To make it stand out from the other movies in this genre, they went for a scrambled chronology and, even if I’m really not a fan of this (usually rather useless) gimmick, I have to admit that it was not a bad approach here though. What was quite well done with this movie was the Almut character. Indeed, she was such a complex character with so many qualities but also flaws. For example, the way she joined this cooking competition while flat-out lying about it towards her partner was really messed-up. And, yet, she was such a competitive person her whole life and I understand that she didn’t want to spend the last year of her life waiting to die and that, instead, she chose to do something extremely difficult which required a set of skills that not many people actually possessed. It’s too bad they didn’t do the same curtesy for the Tobias character. Sure, he was a nice guy who really loved and cared for his wife and kid but they didn’t develop him much as they didn’t really go further than labelling him as ‘The Weetabix guy’. At least, what really worked in this movie was Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. Indeed, I always had a weak spot for these 2 actors and to see them working together was such a treat. As usual, they both delivered some really solid performances and they definitely had some strong chemistry. Anyway, to conclude, even if it was nothing really mind-blowing, it was still a solid drama and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
