An average movie

About 10 years ago, I joined a film club and this movie was one of the few that they had watched without me so I was quite eager to check it out. Well, to be honest, even if was not bad at all, it wasn’t really much more than that though. I mean, the directing was fine, at least, it was better than your average Dutch production, and the two leads (Ton Kas and René van 't Hof) definitely delivered some solid performances. Unfortunately, the whole thing felt rather empty though. Indeed, for a very long time, you just see these two men who seemed to be lost each their own way hanging out together for no clear reason whatsoever and how much you will enjoy all this will depend on how much you like this typical Dutch brand of dry absurdist humor (Alex van Warmerdam is probably the champion in this genre). Well, even though I have always respected the genre, I have to admit that I have never been a huge fan though. The weird thing with this movie was that they completely changed the approach during the last act. Indeed, at some point, Fred found out completely randomly the identity of this mysterious man and, from this point on, the movie completely changed. After that, so many things did happen (for example, they went through some kind of fake wedding) and this change of pace was just quite jarring. By the way, even though I noticed that the actress who played Trudy was really lovely, it was only afterwards that I discovered that she was actually played by Elise Schaap and it was rather strange that I didn’t recognize her right away. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t really work for me, I have to admit that was still a decent watch though and I think it is worth a look but probably only if you really like such little quirky Dutch movies.
