An average movie

To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was starring Marion Cotillard, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, eventually, it turned out to be some kind of mix of 'Young Adult' with 'The Florida Project' with a French touch. Unfortunately, even though I can imagine the appeal for Cotillard of playing such an unlikeable character (seriously, this woman was easily one of the worst mothers I have ever seen), I'm afraid she didn't really nail it. Sure, she wasn't bad at all but there was never a second during which I believed that she wasn't acting anymore and that she actually became this character. There was also the issue that she looked just way too gorgeous for someone who had been obviously an alcoholic for maybe a couple of decades already. The way Amélie Daure, who played her best friend, looked seemed more accurate. Indeed, she actually did look like someone who was probably very good-looking at some point but now probably looked 10 years older than she actually was because of all this boozing. Concerning the little girl played by Ayline Aksoy-Etaix, she wasn't bad but I'm not sure if it was such a great idea to have her carry such a huge chunk of the movie. To be honest, it seems that she was picked up mostly because of her looks and her acting was mostly limited to look sullen most of the duration. To have her drinking all the time was also a mistake. Indeed, it started almost right away and, indeed, it was really shocking at first but they kept repeating this over again with some seriously diminishing effect. Finally, they really struggled to bring some other characters into this tale and this neighbour's son who happens to be a diver was especially half-baked. Anyway, to conclude, even if it didn't really work, I still think it was a worth a look though, if only to see Marion Cotillard trying to play such a dark character for once.
