I always had some mixed feelings concerning 'Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain'. On one hand, I really admired the craftmanship behind it and it was visually definitely a real beauty. However, on the other hand, I thought the story was ok but nothing really amazing and, above all, I was annoyed to death by the hype surrounding this flick, first in France and than in the rest of the world. So, I didn't know what to expect from the next feature directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Audrey Tautou. By now, I have seen it twice and, to my surprise, I really enjoyed it and, as a matter of fact, I think it it is better than 'Le fabuleux destin...'. Indeed, it was visually as impressive but I thought that this time, the story was more straightforward (a young woman looks for a lover) but also less pretentious and annoying. You have once again a top cast (Audrey Tautou, Gaspard Ulliel, Dominique Pinon, André Dussollier, Ticky Holgado, Marion Cotillard, Jodie Foster, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Clovis Cornillac, Denis Lavant, Albert Dupontel, Jean-Paul Rouve, Julie Depardieu, Tchéky Karyo, Jean-Claude Dreyfus), it looked really good and the story was downright entertaining. To conclude, even though it wasn't as successful 'Le fabuleux destin...', in my opinion, it is actually better and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in French movies.
