An average movie

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since it was starring Dustin Hoffman and since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, the damned thing turned out to be pretty weak and it was probably the weakest mindf*ck I had seen in a very long time. In fact, it was probably the best example of when this genre stops being entertaining and becomes seriously messy and, above all, really boring to watch. Sure, I was pretty tired when I watched the damned thing but the fact that I dozed off a couple of times was definitely not a good sign. First of all, even if he wasn’t really bad, Hoffman was completely miscast. I mean, I was the only non-Italian actor, it was only during his scenes that the dialogues were in English so, right from the start, it was pretty obvious that there was something fishy about this character which then ruined the twist towards the end. The rest of the movie was about the investigation of some random guy who was neither a cop or a private detective played by the great Toni Servillo who did manage to do more than Hoffman with this material. However, while this investigation was more developed than anything involving Hoffman, it was still nothing really intriguing though. Indeed, they kept giving some uninteresting details about Genko’s private life which didn’t helpt. Above all, the biggest issue was that the plot was constantly fixating on some weird details which were, for most of the time, rather nonsensical. I read somewhere that this movie was probably some kind of modern Giallo (a genre I’m very unfamiliar with) and, in this genre, it is rather common to have a vastly incoherent story as they focus more on the mood. Anyway, to conclude, it was still rather bewildering to see two great actors stuck in such a cheap and tedious thriller and I don’t think the damned thing was really worth a look.
