This documentary exposes what globalization has done to the economy of Jamaica. A real eye opener. I think of this film everytime I see bananas on sale for $29 cents a pound, as one part of the film explains how the massive corporations like Dole go out of their way to wipe out local banana farmer and just shift all operations to nations that dont have labor laws. Also, it shows how McDonalds opens franchises in all the tourist spots, yet refuses to buy local beef and produce, even threatening lawsuits if government tries to block import of US beef into Jamaica. It explores sweat shop conditions in large manufacturing areas, and how corporations just squash and simply move out if any sort of labor laws are attempted. And it also focuses on why Jamaica went into massive debt, and why they are now 'slaves' to whatever the World Bank dicates to them, in regards to their internal economic policies.
Next time you're out vacationing in Jamaica, thinking you're supporting their economy, take a visit to the slums of Kingston to see what your nation's corporations have done to the local population and industries.
