The Ice Road review

An average movie

I wasn’t expecting much from this flick but my wife was apparently quite eager to check it out so we did end up watching it together. To be honest, I was pretty sure that it would be yet another generic and boring action flick starring Neeson, the stuff that revived his career at some point and is now pretty much ruining it. However, even if it was still action oriented, I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that it was slightly different than his usual work. First of all, the concept was really cool and definitely had some potential. In fact, the first act was actually really solid. Indeed, this mix of badass action with some realistic circumstances was just so effective and quite nail-biting. I wish they kept having these characters facing some natural obstacles until the end but, for some reason, they decided to add a bad guy which was a mistake. Indeed, the rest of the movie was then dealing with this corporation trying to sabotage their own rescue mission which was rather generic and boring. I guess the makers didn’t trust enough the material (I mean, the title is ‘The Ice Road’, not ‘The Evil  Corporation’) so they felt that they had to add something to the mix but it was definitely a mistake. Of course, they must have been worried by the fact they couldn’t have their main actor spending almost all the duration sitting and driving his truck but I wish they found something else than having the guy go fist to fist with some boring thug. At least, the other characters involved (the brother, Jim, Tantoo) were not bad. Anyway, to conclude, I might have been too generous with my rating here but I still loved the concept and it was more interesting than the usual action flicks starring Liam Neeson nowadays.
