To be honest, I had no idea what to expect from this flick but since I have a weak spot for Jennifer Hoffman, I thought I might as well check it out with my wife. It was apparently based on a very successful Dutch TV-show that we both didn’t see it but its success was the main reason why my wife was eager to see this movie. Well, eventually, even though she really liked it, to be honest, I didn’t care much about the damned thing. I mean, there was definitely some potential and it was definitely not awful but there were just too many things that didn’t work or even bothered me. Basically, the main issue was that there were just too many things going on, as if they tried to tell a whole season of the TV-show in 2 hours. Seriously, it has been a while since I have seen such an overstuffed movie. As a result, there were just so many characters involved and, to make things worse, some of them were borderline awful. Indeed, the teachers and kids were maybe not super interesting but they were not bad and at least they were harmless. On the other hand, I really had a hard time to stand the parents. Sure, I got the idea, it was supposed to be a quirky community but I didn’t think it was funny at all to have most of them making some racist jokes or comments through the whole duration. Then, another issue was I didn’t care much for the tone. Indeed, they went for something slightly realistic but they still mixed up some comedy elements to lighten up the proceedings which was a bad idea, at least, as far as I was concerned. Anyway, to conclude, I didn’t connect with this movie at all but I still think it can be worth a look though, at least, if you really like this kind of Dutch movies.
